A message from our Chairman about the recent Supreme Court decision:

Dear Members,

I want to take a moment to acknowledge what many of you may be feeling after the recent Supreme Court decision and now the impending decision from the South Carolina Legislature. Moments like these can bring up a range of emotions—frustration, disappointment, uncertainty, even exhaustion. However you are feeling right now, please know that those feelings are valid.

Each of you brings your own experiences, values, and perspectives to this work. When decisions of this magnitude are made, it is natural for them to resonate deeply—personally and professionally. There is no single “right” way to process this moment.

I also want you to know that I am right there with you. I have been watching every moment of the House of Representatives debate for days—even as it continues late into the evening at 11:38 p.m.—because I understand how important this is and how much it impacts all of us.

At the same time, moments like this call us not only to reflect, but to act. Now is the time to organize, to channel our energy into meaningful action, and to get boots on the ground. We have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to ensure that every voice is heard at the ballot box.

We’re working to mobilize our communities by reaching out directly to voters. A link is available for those who want to get involved in calling and connecting with people across our county. We are also focusing on canvassing in “winnable” precincts, where our efforts can make a real and measurable difference. Your time, your voice, and your presence matter in this moment more than ever.

It’s important that as we step into this work, we continue to support one another, create space for respectful conversation, and extend grace—both to ourselves and to those around us. We are strongest when we lead with empathy, listen with intention, and remain grounded in the purpose that brought us here in the first place.

If you need time to reflect, connect, or simply take a step back, please give yourself permission to do so. And when you are ready, I encourage you to stand with us in this next phase—focused, determined, and united in action.

We will move forward together—supporting one another, learning from one another, and continuing this important work with care, resilience, and purpose.

With appreciation and resolve,

Dee-Dee Johnson-Mikell, Chair
